Departing London
Every January the frozen lake at St. Moritz holds its nerve and takes the weight of a polo tournament. Four teams play high-goal polo on the ice, the ponies studded for grip, the crowd wrapped in fur and cashmere against the Engadin cold, the whole thing invented by the British and perfected by the Swiss. It is the winter's most improbable sport and one of its most beautiful, and the town treats it as a reason to be at its best.
We fly here because some things have to be seen to be believed, and high-goal polo on a frozen lake is one of them. Because the light off the Engadin in January flatters everything, the ponies, the crowd, the mountains behind. Because the town plays host as if the season depends on it, and for one weekend it does.
