Departing London
White Turf is what happens when a town decides its frozen lake should host a racecourse. Across three Sundays in February, thoroughbreds gallop on the snow, and in skijoring, the Engadin's own invention, riderless horses tow skiers down a 2,700-metre course at speeds that look unwise from the grandstand. The tented village behind the rail does champagne and rösti in equal measure, and the whole valley turns out in its best.
We fly here because a day at the races on a frozen Alpine lake is not a thing you get to do twice by accident. Because White Turf has run this since 1907 and the polish shows, in the racing, the skijoring, the tented village behind the rail. Because a February Sunday in the Engadin, cold, bright and sporting, is the winter afternoon most people never think to have.
